Weekend Report

The past few days have been a flurry of activity here on the home front, and unfortunately, I haven't had a lot time for writing and find myself once again playing catchup.

First of all, a /wave for Mark Morrow, my wife's brother. He's currently serving our country in Baghdad, Iraq. Stay safe (...and cool!) over there Mark! You can visit Mark and show him some support on his MySpace Page.

This past Saturday morning, I was up bright and early ready for an eventful day. It was a beautiful day and begin with clear skies over Elizabeth City. In addition to the sunrise photo, you can find other photos that I took of the Museum of the Albemarle in the early morning light over on my Flickr pages.

My 20-year old son Bryan was here for a visit for several days. He left just yesterday and I miss his presence already. I rarely had the opportunity to see Bryan during the 4 years I was working in Kansas City, KS for Bayer CropScience and as a result, there are not very many professionally produced photos of the young man in existence. We began fixing that problem - using an old barn, a single speedlite and a small softbox, we went to work Saturday morning and an hour later, we had some of the most gorgeous photos of Bryan that have ever been produced.

Bryan posted several of the photos from the shoot on his Facebook account, but he's not as good as I am at picking the good ones so you can find all of the images of him online in a Zenfolio Gallery. Additionally, you can communicate with him via his Facebook account. Friend him up!

Following the photoshoot, we headed out to attend our first Elizabeth City Potato Festival. It was certainly a popular event, and for the activities along Main Street, the affair fell right into my categorization of "Too Many People In A Confined Space". It felt a lot like a mini-State Fair, and if you've attended one of those lately, you know exactly what I mean. Once you broke through the Main Street Activities over into some of the events in the Wharf area, it was significantly more enjoyable. Here you can see the Main Street crowd and evidence of the popularity of the event t-shirts.

Over on the green beside Mariner's Wharf, the two highlights that I witnessed were the presence of character actors from the outdoor drama, The Lost Colony. If you've never attended this outstanding performance, I don't know more to say except you simply must go! The performance runs Sunday to Friday from May 30, 2008 till August 20, 2008, and it's a truly enjoyable evening for the entire family (bring bug repellent). I would suspect it's also a wonderful experience and opportunity for aspiring young actors and actresses - check it out!

I know that sounded like a commercial, and I'm sorry, but the Queen herself demanded I provide you with that information as she too was in attendance at the Potato Festival.

The other individual that I spotted on the Mariner's Wharf green was that dastardly scoundrel himself, Blackbeard. He was apparently capturing innocent civilians and hauling them back to his ship to serve his evilness on the high seas. I caught them red-handed as they slipped away with this poor fellow.

This went on all afternoon I hear, and he only avoided detection by the authorities by coming back and telling tall tales for the local children, making himself appear a decent sort of fella. He's apparently a good story-teller too, because he had this group of poor children captivated with his blathering.

One of the last things I saw as I was leaving was the mascot for the festival, Mr. Potato himself. I hope everyone who attended had a great time!

We caught beautiful beams of life in the Elizabeth City area this past weekend.

Have We Caught Yours?
